Loren, sorry so long in replying. Hunt details: paid a trespass fee on private ranch. Weather was really hot. Saw 1 cow and a spike the first 2 days. Asked the rancher if there was any bogs or wallows on the ranch. Found one that was being used. Sat a treestand over the wallow on the 3rd day. Shot this guy at 4 PM. Shot was 22 yards, but he was quartering towards me. Blood on his hind quarter in the pic is actually the exit wound. Hit him behind the shoulder, thru the liver, and out the hind quarter. He wheeled, went 10 yards into the dark timber and stood there. He finally started walking up the hill in the dark timber and I heard him crash. Had 9 guys help pack him out. It was only 1.5 miles back and they took Rangers to within 150 yards of him. Easy pack out.
John, nice elk, how long was the shot and did you have to pack it a long ways to grt it out. Just got back from New Mexico. Did not bag an elk but laid the groundwork for future hunts I hope.
